What is a safety locking restrictor?

A safety locking restrictor is a safety device that can be fitted to the UPVC / PVCu, timber and aluminium frame of a window or balcony door, preventing how far it can be opened. Safety locking restrictors let you keep the windows or doors fully open as and when needed, a great idea if you have children or other vulnerable people around.

Not only does a safety locking restrictor protect from potential accidents it can also offer a layer of freedom. Using a window locking device can be seen as a visual deterrent allowing you to keep your windows and balcony doors open during the summer months without the risk of suspecting burglars being able to gain access by opening the window/door.

Are safety locking restrictors a legal requirement?

Window safety comes under the general health and safety laws, so although it’s not a legal requirement to fit safety locking restrictors within commercial (medical centres, offices, shops) and domestic applications (homes with families, student accommodation) there is still an obligation to keep those within the building safe from any accidents involving windows.

Rental properties

Landlords aren’t legally required to fit safety locking restrictors however it is highly advised they are installed on any windows or door above the ground floor; especially if the property is being rented out by students or families with younger children. It is also a good idea to ensure that the safety locking restrictor is also a child resistant locking device to further reduce the risk of accidents

Hotels and B&B’s

Larger hotels & hotel chains tend to install safety locking restrictors to cover themselves against any type of accident / tragedy involving windows. Due to the clientele of a hotel, it is easier and safer to have the devices fitted on all windows and balcony doors.

Workplaces

It isn’t a legal requirement however similarly to hotels fitting these devices helps to cover the building owner / company if an accident was to occur. Newer buildings will have window safety already incorporated within the design so safety locking restrictors might not be needed, however can be added as an extra layer of protection if the pre-installed safety locking restrictor were to fail.

Are safety locking restrictors easy to fit?

Fitting safety locking restrictors is a relatively simple task taking around 10-15 minutes and requiring a few tools. The fixings required are provided with the device itself along with fitting instructions (which be found here).

How do you install a safety locking restrictor?

To install the Era Safety Locking Restrictor, it is recommended you use the included 5 x 4.5 x 45mm Gimlet point screws for UPVC / PVCu, timber and aluminium windows and doors.

  1. It is recommended that the positioning of the device is above the handle when fitted vertically on a window or door and positioned to the side of the handle if fitted horizontally, to allow for free movement of the handle.
  2. When selecting the position for the device mark the position of the cable holder on the sash. Open the window to the desired distance which must be less than 89mm (to ensure compliance with BS EN 16281:2013), position the lock body on the frame and mark.
  3. Once the position has been correctly determined, using the lock body screw onto the frame with the cable insertion facing upwards.
  4. With the cable inserted into the lock body, position the cable holder on the window or door and release the cable, then screw into position. Peel off the film from the rear of the screw covers and stick into position.
