For well over 100 years Briton have been manufacturing and supplying the very best door control and exit hardware on the market. Many of the original Briton “B” closers are still functioning over 100 years since they were engineered.
The Briton 2003v overhead door closer from Alegion has become an industry staple thanks to its high performance, build quality and reliability. The closer is size 1-4 allowing for further customisation to how much power the closer can output. Due to the fact that the closer is variable powered it means the door closer is suitable for use on smaller & larger doors, and also in different locations; such as a front door where wind can cause problems.
The 2003v is certifire approved. It’s recognised by the certifire brand who are a regulatory authority known worldwide. They cover a diverse range of passive fire products, including hardware.
The Briton 2003v is easy to install and adjust due to its adjustable power. The box contains all of the relevant instructions and templates to get the overhead closer operating in the correct manner.
To change the power size of the 2003v you would need to remove the cover and then rotate the relevant screws according to the instruction manual. The power size is important when fitting the closer to larger and heavier fire doors but also depending on the location. A light door on the outside of a building could require a larger power size to allow the closer to shut the door under heavy winds, this will in turn increase the life span of the closer.
As with most mechanical things door closers can wear out, the devices can be easily used hundreds of thousands of times throughout its life span. However, this can be prevented by taking out regular maintenance on them, you can expect at least 10 years of use. Allegion also offer a 10-year guarantee on the Briton 2003v so if the device were to fail then it will be replaced with a new unit. If the seals of the closer were to wear out then the closer can no longer be adjusted and it can tend to slam the door. In this case you would need to replace the whole unit.
A benefit of having a surface mounted closer or an external closer like the Briton 2003v is that they are really easy to remove and replace in the event that you need to.
A great way of keeping your closer performing for a longer period of time is by adding additional ironmongery to the door. To reduce strain on the hinges from users using too much opening force on a door you can add a door stop to mitigate the hinges from opening further than they should, which in turn can put strain on the door closer.
The latch speed on a door closer works similarly to how a soft close drawer would work in a kitchen. When the door is within the final few inches of movement, before it meets the latching point the closer will slow the door right down. The latch speed stops the door from slamming into the door frame and putting strain on the door hinges. The latch speed can be adjusted by following the instruction manual.
